Innovations & Design

The Harrison Township School District provides students in grades K-6 the opportunity to partake in authentic learning experiences. The Innovations and Design class is a special area course that all students in first through sixth grade have once per cycle. During their time in Innovation and Design, students design, learn, collaborate, experiment, and explore. Students spend the first trimester focusing on coding, computer programming, and digital citizenship. Coding applications and tools for students in Grade(s) K-3 include Kodable, Ozobots, Dash robot, and Code and Go Mouse. Common Sense media is used to deliver and sequence digital citizenship lessons. During the second trimester, students learn about life literacies, such as being a responsible digital citizen. Digital Common Sense Media is utilized to sequence and deliver these lessons. Students also learn about the steps in the Engineering Design Process through real world activities and project learning. In the third trimester, students apply the Engineering Design Process to global problems. They look at and learn how these problems affect other cultures and other parts of the world. Students will understand how expanding technology and knowledge can best help us address these problems for people all over the world.
